Ready Windows? A 5, 6, 7……8?
Ok Microsoft, keep it in you pants. We get it. We’re all excited about your new OS Windows 7 despite the fact that it should have been this way when Vista came out. But Windows 8? Aren’t we getting a little ahead of ourselves?
That’s right my friends, Windows 8, and its not just a rumor. At an Italian Windows Server conference, Microsoft revealed a road map for upcoming releases, and guess what made the cut. Yup, Windows 8. If you look closely at the road map you’ll even see an approximate, and i stress approximate, release date of 2012ish.
Apparently Microsoft had started planning phases for Win 8 when Win 7 was only just into Milestone 1. Guess they didn’t have much faith Win 7 would cut it. Other then a lack of faith, you gotta hand it to them, this is not only ballsy, but very prompt and keeping with the times.
If you don’t know what I mean by keeping with the times, let me explain. With the average rate of growth in technological advancements such as processor speeds growing at exponential rates, companies in this industry need to have new software to support the new hardware almost every two years. A two year old computer is like 90 in human years.
Well Microsoft has apparently taken this into account when releasing some specs for the new OS. I know right, specs already, they’re not kidding with this one.
Here’s a list of some of these specs. Some of them may be a little much and you might not understand them ( I didn’t at first) but there’s one in particular that if it doesn’t catch your eye, you probably should start re-thinking your hobbies.
- Distributed File System Replication (DFSR): A new type of folder syncing across multiple server. Something that may show up in Windows Server 8.
- BranchCache Improvements: This was a feature for caching websites added into Win 7 and will be updated and improved (not sure what that means) in Windows 8
- 128 Bit Kernels: ARE YOU SERIOUS?! I’m pretty sure the public just got use to using 64 bit OS’s and besides, how long until we even have 128bit processors to support this?!
So that last bit about the 128bit Kernels is what I meant about Microsoft keeping with the times. It really is only a matter of time when 128bit processors start popping up, and 2012 or 2013 is probably a fair guess as to the date. We’ll see, if its anything like Windows 7, I think a lot of us will be happy. But for the love of technology, PLEASE, only one version, none of this home, personal, business, professional, ultimate crap. We can tell a marketing ploy when we see one.
